Resumes, Cover Letters, and Job Interviews
As you launch your job search, be sure you have a high-quality resume. Create multiple versions of it tailored to specific jobs, fields, or companies. You also need to write individual cover letters to include with each resume you send. It's even more important to tailor each cover letter to each position. For more information about resumes, see our resumes section.
The other key thing to work on is your interviewing technique. After working hard at your job search, you'll want to be prepared for the next step too—the interview. When you land an interview, celebrate that small success, because many applicants don’t get one. Then be sure to prepare! See our Guide to Effective Interviewing for in-depth guidance.
For personal assistance with resumes, cover letters, and interviewing, the Career and Community Learning Center offers the following:
- Free workshops. These are offered throughout each semester.
- Free resume critiques. No appointment needed.
- Online practice interviews
- Personal guidance from our friendly Peer Advisors. Visit our 135 Johnston Hall office weekdays between 8 and 4:30.
- You can also visit our office to browse on your own—we have many books about resumes, cover letters, and interviewing.
- Appointments with a professional career counselor. To schedule one, visit 135 Johnston, call 612-624-7577, or email cclc@umn.edu.
- Job Fairs and career-related events. Check our events page for listings.
